Submissions for our Spring 2024 journal are due by March 3rd, 2024, by 11:59 PM ET. Apply here!

The Columbia Double Exposure Film & Media Journal, a journal of undergraduate film & media scholarship based at Columbia University in the City of New York, is accepting submissions for its Spring 2024 issue. We encourage undergraduate students at universities anywhere across the United States to submit articles, research papers, and essays that relate to the field of film & media studies.

The deadline for submissions is March 3rd, 2024, by 11:59 PM ET, but we encourage you to submit before that deadline. In recognition of the various paths undergraduates may take to study film & media studies, we welcome submissions of research articles, senior theses, and essays embracing a wide range of topics and viewpoints related to film & media studies. Undergraduate students in any major, track, or class year should feel free to send us their work. Peruse our past issues tab to view past journals.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Below is a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for prospective authors interested in submitting to Double Exposure’s Journal. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to us at doubleexposurejournal@gmail.com, and the Editor-In-Chief and/or other relevant E-Board members will respond accordingly.

Who can submit to the Double Exposure Journal?

We welcome submissions from undergraduates attending colleges and universities across the United States—you do not have to be a Columbia or Barnard student! Note that to publish a standard article in our journal, the author has to have been an undergraduate when they wrote it.

How often do you publish the Double Exposure Journal?

We publish our journal twice a year: issues are published at the end of the Fall and Spring semesters.

How long should my journal submission be?

We accept and publish pieces of all lengths, but we typically publish papers that are between 6 and 12 pages (1500-3000 words excluding references), not including citations.

Can my submission include media?

Visual media is both permitted and encouraged in submissions.

Can I submit after the deadline?

If you send your submission after the deadline, we cannot guarantee that it will be submitted for consideration by the staff.

I am not a film major, but I am still interested in submitting something to the Double Exposure Journal. Is that possible?

Absolutely! We accept submissions from students of all majors and concentrations.

Why was my submission rejected?

We reject articles that do not discuss film & media-related matters, are not written by undergraduates, or otherwise fail to meet our basic criteria. Generally speaking, we look for quality, relevance, and substance, but we believe that there are many paths to creating a successful submission.

Do you give feedback on submissions that were rejected? Are resubmissions allowed?

We are unfortunately not able to offer feedback on individual submissions. If you are making a resubmission, we generally encourage you to first revise/modify the argument structure and writing so that it is not the exact submission that was previously sent to us.

What goes on behind the scenes in the selection process?

The Double Exposure board reads all of the submitted materials and chooses pieces that best fit our mission. Each accepted submission is reviewed by an editor, who edits it for content, grammar, and stylistic consistency. The Double Exposure team works with the author to ensure a collaborative editing process.

My profile/the length of my submission doesn’t exactly fit into your criteria. However, I have a well-written and relevant submission. Would you be interested in publishing it?

Absolutely! If you would like to discuss your non-traditional piece for further clarity, reach out to us directly at doubleexposurejournal@gmail.com
